The Yellow Raincoat

About this piece

A painted concept, not a render: a small girl in a hooded yellow coat with a closed umbrella, standing in a blue-grey rain lane. Done between contracts to keep the 2D muscles warm; personal 2D pieces like this one feed every 3D design that follows.

The whole painting hangs on two shapes — the yellow triangle of the coat and the dark comma of the hair. Everything else is weather. Limited palette, big brush, no zooming past 50 percent.

Process

1. Thumbnail twelve compositions; pick the one readable at stamp size.
2. Block two values and one accent color before any detail.
3. Stop at 80 percent; the last 20 percent is where paintings go to die.
